We retrofit and regenerate our built environment

What is ‘retrofitting’?
Retrofitting is the process of upgrading existing buildings to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This can include installing new technologies, upgrading insulation and building fabric, or applying a combination of measures to reduce energy demand. Beyond its environmental benefits, retrofitting plays a critical role in economic regeneration, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
Across the UK, approximately 24 million homes require retrofitting to meet the government’s targets. Much of this housing stock is ageing, poorly insulated, and concentrated in areas experiencing economic decline. As a result, households face high energy costs, fuel poverty, and poor living conditions – factors that can reinforce wider social and economic inequality.

Retrofit programmes act as a catalyst for local economic growth whilst helping households and businesses reduce their energy bills by installing renewable and energy efficient measures.

To meet the UK Government’s targets, every home must be upgraded to at least EPC band C.
Achieving this by 2050 means retrofitting over 2,450 homes every single day, seven days a week, for the next 27 years.
The reality is that much of the UK’s housing stock is not fit for purpose. Poor insulation, inefficient glazing, outdated heating systems, and persistent draughts mean homes are losing vast amounts of energy – driving up costs and contributing to the ongoing energy crisis.
A coordinated, national retrofit programme is essential. Not only will it significantly reduce carbon emissions and lower household energy bills, but it will also create thousands of skilled jobs across the country – supporting local economies and building a more resilient, sustainable future.
We are already working alongside local authorities, social housing providers, and policymakers to confront this challenge head-on and accelerate the transition to sustainable homes.
